Meaningful Movies Return

After the December hiatus we are back this week with a great film that tackles freedom of speech, the Egyptian Spring and the roll of comedy in shaping the public consciousness. “Tickling Giants” starts at 7 pm at the Old Liberty Theater in downtown Ridgefield.  Doors open at 6:15, Wednesday January 24th.

Tickling Giants tells the story of Dr. Bassem Youssef, the “Egyptian Jon Stewart”, who decides to leave his job as a heart surgeon and become a late-night comedian. The movie is about how he finds creative, non-violent ways to protect free speech and fight a president who abuses his power.

We are honored to have guest speaker, Shirin Elkoshairi, who is originally from Virginia and is currently a partner at a small IT consulting firm. He has been a sideline activist for years but increased his level of activism after returning from Egypt and realizing how easy is was for people to be silenced if they don’t take action. You may know him from the “Conversations with Muslims” events that have been happening around town. He is also part of the Faith Action Network, the Interfaith Clergy of Vancouver, Indivisible Greater Vancouver, the Islamic Society of SW WA and the 18th LD Democrats.
