Fayetteville, North Carolina (WNCN) Storms and high winds hit Fayetteville and Cumberland County on Sunday morning, causing some damage and more than 1,000 power outages.
The National Weather Service issued a high wind advisory for the area until 4 p.m., predicting gusts of up to 45 mph.
The National Weather Service reported a 61-mph gust just after 9:20 a.m. at Fayetteville Regional Airport.
Wind damage occurred at the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, damaging windows in two patient rooms, according to officials.
According to photos taken by a woman at the hospital, the damage occurred in a courtyard. At least two windows appeared to have been blown out, and debris was smashed on the courtyard’s concrete.
According to Chaka Jordan, spokesperson for Cape Fear Valley Health, the incident occurred around 9:30 a.m., when a cover for a portion of the HVAC system became dislodged due to strong winds and struck the windows of two patient rooms on the seventh floor, breaking the glass.
“One of the affected rooms was occupied at the time, but thankfully, the patient was not injured,” Jordan told me via email.
The patient was quickly relocated to another area, and staff members began assessing and repairing the damage.
Duke Energy reported at noon that approximately 1,000 customers in northwest Fayetteville were without power. Cumberland County experienced scattered outages.
