A driver has been accused in a crash that killed his mother on I-95 in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH — A Saugus, Massachusetts, man has been charged with negligent homicide in connection with a rollover crash on Interstate 95 on February 28, 2024, which killed his mother.

A Rockingham County grand jury indicted Byung Moo Hur, 39, this month on a single Class B felony charge. The crash occurred in Portsmouth, near the Greenland town line.

Last year, New Hampshire State Police identified the victim as 65-year-old Taesoon Hur of Buena Park, California, who was confirmed to be the driver’s mother.

The deadly interstate incident was one of several fatal accidents on I-95 in the Seacoast in 2024.

Last year, state police announced that a northbound Genesis G70 lost control during the morning commute, swerved across the paved portion of the interstate, entered the grass median, and collided with a light pole, ejecting Taesoon Hur. State police previously reported that she was pronounced dead on the scene.

The county’s charging document, released Thursday afternoon, makes no mention of the driver’s relationship with the victim. The indictment states that Byung Moo Hur “negligently caused the death of T.S.H. by driving his vehicle at a high rate of speed based on the weather conditions at the time on I-95.”

According to state police, Byung Moo Hur was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries following the crash. The incident closed a section of the highway for about three hours while authorities investigated.

Byung Moo Hur will be arraigned at Rockingham County Superior Court in Brentwood on Friday, March 21 at 10 a.m. Justice Rudolph Ogden will serve as the presiding judge.

It was not immediately clear whether Byung Moo Hur had an attorney.
